Fisheries Co-Management Pre-Implementation Project in Jubaland, Somalia
The Fisheries Co-Management Pre-Implementation Project was implemented in Kismayo City, Lower Juba, Jubaland State, from 01 September 2023 to 31 January 2024, for Secure Fisheries, a program of the One Earth Future Foundation.
The project aimed to lay the foundation for effective fisheries co-management by strengthening the institutional, governance, and leadership capacities of fisheries cooperatives and local stakeholders in Jubaland.
The initiative focused on building shared understanding of co-management principles, improving cooperative governance structures, and promoting inclusive participation to support sustainable fisheries management and long-term community resilience.
Key Activities & Achievements
Delivered five practical training modules tailored to the needs of fisheries cooperatives.
Developed and applied Somali-language visual toolkits and training curricula to ensure accessibility and effective learning.
Trained 38 participants from 15 fisheries cooperatives, strengthening leadership and operational capacity.
Guided 12 cooperatives in adopting by-laws, basic financial management tools, and governance frameworks.
Promoted gender inclusion and elder participation in cooperative governance and decision-making processes.
Applied participatory learning approaches, including simulations, visual learning methods, and storytelling techniques.
All activities were delivered through interactive and participatory methodologies, ensuring strong knowledge retention and practical application. The project contributed to improved cooperative governance, enhanced accountability, and readiness for the implementation of fisheries co-management systems in Jubaland.
